Al Riwaq is a new museum in Doha, within walking distance from the Museum of Islamic Art. It doesn’t seem like a museum from the outside, it just looks like a big painted building, but once you go inside, it’s a mammoth labyrinth of art. It doesn’t host a permanent collection, and at the time of my visit, there was an exhibition by renowned Iraqi Artist, Dia Azzawi. HE currently lives between Doha and London, so I guess you could interpret this as a “home” collection. In the late 1960’s, he formed a union of artists that formed the “New Vision Group”, that brought them together ideologically, as opposed to stylistically. The group treated contemporary issues, such as the plight of the Palestinian people.
I consider myself lucky to have been exposed to his creations, as they all demonstrate techniques that express primal human emotions. His clever use of colour and lines guide your eyes to exactly where you should be looking, and I have to say that there is something quite mesmerising about his work.
